Whats in a name : Scottish football teams

Scotland has a large amount of teams that if you were to search for the name on the map, you would get nowhere

In this article we look at some of these teams and explain where the names come from.

Heart of Midlothian Football Club

Hearts is a professional football club in Edinburgh, Scotland

Hearts was formed in 1874

Its name was influenced by Walter Scott’s novel The Heart of Midlothian.

Hibernian

Hibs is a professional football club based in the Leith area of Edinburgh

he club was founded in 1875 by members of Edinburgh’s Irish community, and named after the Roman word for Ireland

Ross County

Ross County are based in Dingwall

Prior to the 1994–95 season they played in the Highland Football League

The club was formed in 1929 in what was then Ross and Cromarty. The club was subsequently renamed Ross County

St Mirren

St Mirren are based in Paisley, Renfrewshire near Glasgow

The club were founded in 1877.

They are named after Saint Mirin, the founder of a church at the site of Paisley Abbey and Patron Saint of Paisley.

St Johnstone

This club are based in Perth. The club were founded in 1884.

The name is derived from St John’s Toun aka Saint Johnstoun – which is the old name of Perth

Raith Rovers

They are actually based in the town of Kirkcaldy, Fife. The club was founded in 1883.

Raith which in Scottish Gaelic roughly means a “fort” or “fortified residence” as an area once stretched from south of Loch Gelly as far as Kirkcaldy and the Battle of Raith was once theorised to have been fought here in 596 AD.

Queen’s Park

Queen’s Park is the oldest association football club in Scotland, having been founded in 1867.

Queen’s Park is also the only Scottish football club to have played in the FA Cup Final

They used to play at Hampden park but will move into Lesser Hampden in the near future

Queen of the South

The club were formed in 1919 and come from Dumfries.

Dumfries got its nickname Queen of the South from David Dunbar, a local poet, who in 1857 stood for Parliament in the General Election.

In one of his addresses, he called Dumfries the “Queen of the South” and this became synonymous with the town.

Clyde

Yes, you have heard of the River CLyde but where do Clyde come from.

Originally from Glasgow they were formed in 1877 and played at shawfield in glasgow.

In recent years they have played in Broadwood Stadium, Cumbernauld and currently at New Douglas Park, Hamiltons stadium

Albion Rovers

This team comes from Coatbridge in North Lanarkshire

Albion Rovers were formed in 1882 from a merger of two Coatbridge sides Albion FC and Rovers FC

East Fife

a semi-professional football club established in 1903 in Methil, Fife, Scotland

So the name is based on where they are located

The club were the first to win the Scottish League Cup three times and the first of only two sides from the second tier of the Scottish league system to win the Scottish Cup
