Jadon Sancho completes £73m move to Manchester United from Borussia Dortmund

Well after a fairly long time when you factor in the last couple of transfer windows Manchester United have finally got their man. The player the fans were desperate to get – if you believe Youtube channels.

As the title says Jadon Sancho has finally  completed a £73m move to Manchester United from Borussia Dortmund. This is a 5 year deal.

28.10.2020. Германия, Дортмунд, «Сигнал Идуна Парк». Лига Чемпионов УЕФА 2020/21, группа F, «Боруссия» — «Зенит».

The deal

Now this is quite a high transfer fee but since this appears to be no more than Man Utd offered last year at the same time that was turned down, its interesting that this season that bid has been expected.

Whether or not there are clauses or this is simply because in the current climate with Covid that has affected Dortmund badly , its hard to say but I thought they may have got at least another 10 million for him.

Having said that he is 21 and if you can believe football contracts, a five year deal seems good value in this day and age for a top quality player.

He is a winger – not sure that was Man United’s biggest problem they needed sorted but he is without doubt an upgrade on players they have in that position.

Stats

Sancho’s stats for Dortmund were pretty good to be honest

In his time he scored 50 goals and also managed to notch up 57 assists in a total of 137 appearances.

He at the time of writing has 22 caps for England, scoring the 3 goals. 2 against Kosovo in UEFA Euro 2020 qualification and 1 against the Republic of Ireland in a friendly

His trophies so far have been DFL-Supercup in 2019 and the DFB-Pokal in 2020–21.

England

I thought personally he was under used by England, hard to criticize a manager when your team makes the final but i thought he may have got more minutes on the pitch than he did.

The decision for him to take a penalty after coming on in injury time, not kicking the ball and properly warming up was also strange.

This does set up the possibility that as long as Gareth Southgate is manager this will stay the case – where England should building a team around players like Sancho – will he be limited to sub appearances or friendly appearances.

Hopefully not for England’s point of view because on paper, in the midfield and forward positions once again England have a ‘golden generation’ but do they have a manager that can get the best out of them, unlike the previous one.

Quotes

Sancho

“I’ll always be grateful to Dortmund for giving me the opportunity to play first-team football, although I always knew that I would return to England,”.

“The chance to join Manchester United is a dream come true and I just cannot wait to perform in the Premier League.

“This is a young and exciting squad and I know, together, we can develop into something special to bring the success that the fans deserve.”

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

“Jadon epitomises the type of player I want to bring to the club – he is a forward player in the best traditions of Manchester United,” Solskjaer told the club website.

Final Take

A statement signing by Manchester Utd (would it have happened if the backlash to the European Super League hadn’t occurred – one to discuss probably) .

He certainly enhances the squad, he is young, he is English and an internationalist

It will be interesting to see what Man City fans make of all of this as well and some of the initial statements.
