Liverpool equal highest winning margin : lets look at the other three times this happened

OK, today Liverpool have just handed out a 9-0 thrashing to Bournemouth but this is not the first time that this result has occurred . In fact the have tied the highest winning margin.

Matches

Manchester United 9–0 Ipswich Town : 1994–95 FA Premier League

In the corresponding fixture at Ipswich’s Portman Road ground earlier in the season, they had beaten United 3–2. So was this a case of revenge.

This was an absolute drubbing. It was only 3-0 at half time but in the second half Ipswich collapsed and conceded another 6.

It was famous for And Cole scoring 5 goals. The fact that Man United had 14 shots on target and scored 9.

To run salt in the wound, Paul Ince scored United’s eighth with a free kick into an empty net while Ipswich’s goalkeeper Craig Forrest argued with the referee. A true comedy moment.

Ipswich finished the season in last place and were relegated while Manchester United were second behind champions Blackburn Rovers.

Here is something to consider : Eric Cantona was missing from this game, he was serving a suspension

Southampton 0–9 Leicester City : 2019–20 Premier League

There were a lot of big wins, many teams scoring 8 goals but it took until 2019-20 for the magic 9 to be reached.

To be fair this game did turn when Ryan Bertrand of Southampton was sent off for a studs-up challenge. This was 2 minutes after Leicester scored the opening goal through Ben Chillwell

By Half Time it was 5-0 and another 4 were added with Ayoze Pérez and Jamie Vardy scoring hat tricks

It was only the second time in Premier League history that two players scored a hat-trick for one team in the same game

You could say the sending off had an impact, that is correct but surely they could have shut up shop and done a better job than what they did. At times it was shambolic.

The two sides would play each other again in the return fixture where Southampton went on to win the match 2–1

Manchester United 9–0 Southampton : 2020–21 Premier League

Its Man Utd again and 1 season later Southampton again – oh dear

Seven different players scored for United and that does not include an own goal, this equaled the all-time Premier League record of most goalscorers for the same team in a single match

Looking back Southampton did have a lot of injuries and with a smallish squad, that didn’t help : Ibrahima Diallo, Michael Obafemi, Oriol Romeu, Nathan Tella, Jannik Vestergaard, Theo Walcott and Kyle Walker-Peters being some of the players out.

Manchester United by comparison had a full squad

Like the previous game it turned on a sending off, this time even earlier. In the second minute of the match, Southampton midfielder Alexandre Jankewitz was sent off for a high challenge on Scott McTominay – it was his first start

Southampton did have another players sent off, Bednarek – the penalty was converted and then they added another 2 goals.

So 1 penalty, 1 own goal and 2 sending offs in what was a complete debacle of a performance – arguably worse than the previous seasons 9-0 thrashing. Southampton appealed the red card issued to Bednarek, which was later rescinded by The Football Association

Tottenham Hotspur had a 9–1 victory over Wigan Athletic at White Hart Lane on 22 November 2009
