Various teams that have been relegated from the Premier league and what happened to them part 1

In this article we look at a collection of teams that have been relegated from teh Premier League and what happened after that.

Its no every team but it is the ones we find interesting and shows how hard it can be to stay in the league and get back in it.

List

1993–94_FA_Premier_League

Oldham Athletic

Managed to survive the first season but they finished second bottom with 40 points

They then spent all of their time since 1996-97 in the third tier of english football, not even get back to the championship

They were then relegated to the National League last season – the first former Premier League club to play non-League football.

An utter shambles of a club off the pitch – which an article could easily be written on. Protests about the owner who genuinely doesn’t seem to have any idea what he is doing – looks a long way back for their long suffering fans

Swindon Town

Finished bottom with 30 points. They were relegated after recording only five wins and conceding 100 goals

They had appointed Glenn Hoddle as manager who got them promoted the previous season, that was an achievement in itself but then he moved to Chelsea. After that it was a downward spiral and they never really got their season going.

Again have flirted between league 1 and league 2 ever since and never threatened the premier league

1997–98_FA_Premier_League

Barnsley

Were relegated with 35 points

have spent many seasons in the championship usually finishing near the bottom of the table in 20-21 they did reach the play-offs but fell short

They shipped 82 goals and suffered some heavy defeats like 6-0 to Chelsea, 7-0 to Man United and 6-0 to West Ham. With that defensive record its always going to be an uphill battle.

They did beat Liverpool 1-0 away in one of the few highlights from the season and even won 3 games in a row at one point

1998–99 FA Premier League

Nottingham Forest

Were relegated with 30 points

Its hard to believe this was the last time prior to this season that Forest played in the Premier League. They even spent 3 seasons in League 1. A fallen giant who at one point won the European cup.

With just 7 wins and 30 points all season, they had never really looked like beating the drop and sufferd an absolute humiliation losing 8-1 to Manchester United at home.

A shambles of a season where they sold Kevin Campbell, Pierre Van Hooijdonk went AWOL who eventually returned and appointed Ron Atkinson as manager to save them – it didn’t work.

The points tally could have been worse – they won their last 3 games.

1999–2000 FA Premier League

Sheffield Wednesday

Were relegated with 31 points, in a low points season 5 back from Bradford in 17th

Mainly a championship team they have flirted with league 1 as well, finished in the play offs places a couple of times but never managed to get promoted.

A poor start to the season saw the club fail to win any of their first nine league games and they also got hammered 8-0 by Newcastle

In the bottom 2 all season, it took them 10 games to register a win.

Wimbledon

Were relegated with 33 points, 3 points off safety.

It was hard to believe this was the crazy gang and the team that won the FA cup. That was the thing though – they punched above their weight for the size of the club

It went from bad to worse, mainly off the pitch. The announced plans to relocate, attendances dropped and AFC Wimbledon were formed by a group of fans who disagreed with the move to Milton Keynes.

Only lasted 4 seasons in the old division 1 before finishing bottom and the infamous MK Dons rebranding exercise occured. Now of course AFC Wimbledon and MK Dons are both in the league setup.

2000–01 FA Premier League

Bradford

Relegated with 26 points, 16 from safety.

This was the season that Man City also got relegated. Bradford had managed to climb from the old Division 3 to the Premier league and survive the first season.

The second season was a step too far. Hard to believe the beat Chelsea 2-0 in their second game but this was 1 of only 5 all season. It was game 16 before they won their next game.

Bradford City even competed in the UEFA Intertoto Cup this season, remember that. Actually managed 4 wins in that tournament.

Flirted between League 1 and league 2 ever since

Coventry City

Relegated with 34 points, 8 from safety.

Oh, boy has it been hard for Coventry fans – administartion issues, ownership headaches and stadium woes. Its been a tough time since the remier league years

After 34 years in the top flight and flirting with releagtion many times, their luck finally ran out and they were relegated after a 3–2 away defeat at Aston Villa on 5 May 2001.

They actually won 2 of their first 3 games

Managed to reach the 4th tier of english football before a minor resurgence has seen them make it back to the championship with 2 mid table finishes in a row.
