It is always interesting to see teams that are promoted in various leagues around Europe. Which teams have been out of the top league for years and even clubs achieving the dream of promotion for the first ever time.
La Liga – Spain
The first two teams to earn promotion from Segunda División were Almería and Real Valladolid, on the very last match day of the season.
Almería returned to La Liga after a seven-year absence, while Valladolid came back after only one year.
The third and final team to be promoted were Girona who won the play-off final 3–1 against Tenerife, returning after a three-year absence.
Ligue 1 – France
Ther were some interesting teams promoted to Ligue 1, teams that have been absent for several years including a team that used to be a big player in France and European football.
Toulouse were promoted after a two-year absence), Ajaccio were promoted to Ligue 1 after an eight-year absence and AJ Auxerre were promoted after a lengthy ten-year absence
Bundesliga – Germany
There were 2 absolute giants of German football promoted back Schalke 04 and Werder Bremen
Schalke were promoted back to the Bundesliga on 7 May 2022, following a 3–2 victory over FC St. Pauli after 1 year in 2. Bundesliga
Werder Bremen finished runners-up in the 2021–22 2. Bundesliga and won promotion back to the Bundesliga after one season
Seria A – Italy
There were 2 amazing promotions, 1 team for the first time although they are well backed behind the scene.
Lecce were promoted as Serie B champions, Cremonese as Serie B runners-up, and Monza went up as Serie B playoff winners.
Lecce returned to top flight after 2 years of absence, whilst Cremonese returned after an astonishing 26 years of absence and Monza were promoted to Serie A for the first time in the club’s history.
Eredivisie – Holland
FC Emmen were promoted after a one-year absence, FC Volendam were promoted after thirteen years and Excelsior were promoted after a three-year absence from the 2021–22 Eerste Divisie.
Primeira Liga – Portugal
Rio Ave were promoted after a one-year absence, Casa Pia were promoted after a massive 83 years absence and Chaves were promoted after a three year absence were promoted from the 2021–22 Liga Portugal 2
Süper Lig – Turkey
The 2021–22 TFF First League champions were Ankaragücü, runner-ups Ümraniyespor and play-off winners İstanbulspor.
Ankaragücü returned to top level at the first attempt, Ümraniyespor is competing in the Süper Lig for the first time in their history.
İstanbulspor returned to top level after 17 years
Swiss Super League
Winterthur were able to achieve a last round championship victory in the Swiss Challenge League. It will be the first time since 1982 that the team played in the top Swiss football league.
Austrian Football Bundesliga
Austria Lustenau were promoted, after twenty-two years, as champions of the 2021–22 Austrian Football Second League
